Domestic abuse is a pattern of controlling and abusive behaviour within an intimate or family type relationship. This can encompass the following and is not exhaustive: 
 
Physical abuse may include; 
Hitting, slapping, punching and biting 
Burning with cigarettes 
Strangulation 
Using weapons or objects 
 
Sexual abuse may include: 
Rape 
Unwanted touching 
Having to have sex just appease the partner 
Forcing you to do something or participate in something you do not want to do 
 
Economic abuse may include: 
Forcing you to work or not allowing you to work 
Controlling the money; making you ask for money 
Getting finance in your name 
Making you pay for most things/not contributing to the household 
 
Psychological abuse may include: 
Name calling and putting you down 
Blaming you for them losing their temper 
Hiding things i.e. keys to make you think you think you are going mad 
Constantly criticising everything you do.
